Kunqu

Finland and Sweden were treated to spectacular performances of traditional Kunqu opera during the Nordic Chinese Culture Festival in 2007. The 40-member Northern Kunqu Opera Troupe performed at Tampere Hall (1.9), in Helsinki's Alexander Theatre (3. and 4.9), in Turku's Åbo Swedish Theatre (7.9) and in Stockholm's Scala Theatre (9.9).

Main Events

The Nordic Chinese Culture Festival 2007 had two main events – one in Kontula in Helsinki (31.8) and another at Tampere's Old Library Building (1.9). Both events were free to the public and were enjoyed by both children and adults alike. The main events featured dance performances, kung fu demonstrations, selections from Kunqu opera, lectures, tea tasting and a Chinatown marketplace.

BMDC

At the Chinese Culture Festival 2007, the award-winning Beijing Modern Dance Company wowed audiences during their performances at Helsinki's STOA (11.9) and in Tampere's Hällä Dance Theatre (12.9). The group also performed at the Modern Dance Theatre in Stockholm (8. and 9.9).

Movie weeks

Movie weeks, as always, were an integral part of the Chinese Culture Festival 2007. This year, the movie weeks were held from 31.8 to 16.9 in Helsinki, Jyväskylä, Oulu, Tampere and Turku. Five modern Chinese films on romance, love and relationships were featured.

Zeng Laide

Calligraphist Zeng Laide performed during the Chinese Cultural Festival 2007 to the music of guqin player Qiao Shan. The calligraphy performances were seen in Tampere's Vapriikki Museum (2.9), in Oslo's Baerum Culture House (6.9), in Eskilstuna's Art Museum (8.9), and in Stockholm's East Asian Museum (9.9).

Children's Centre Rulla

Tampere's Children's Centre Rulla played host to a “Chinese Lion” event on 2.9 as part of the Chinese Culture Festival 2007. The event was for young children and included handicrafts, scenes from Kunqu opera and liondances.
